Mobile OS War: Android vs. iOS

Mobile OS War Android Vs. iOS

The statistics posted on various websites depict an increase in the market share of two major operating systems – iOS and Android. But according to latest market share data released by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Android dominated the smartphone market in 2016 with a share of 86.8%, whereas the market share of iOS was only 12.5%. The statistics clearly indicate that Google’s mobile operating system is currently much more popular than Apple’s mobile operating system. Many analysts believe that the massive market share of Android will remain popular in 2017.

Why Android will Remain More Popular than iOS in 2017?

A Wider Range of Devices

The choice of mobile device differs from one individual to another. The iOS-powered devices are launched exclusively by Apple. Hence, a user has to choose from specific models of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Also, Apple devices are expensive, and often described as ‘rich man’s phone’. On the other hand, a large number of companies manufacture Android-powered devices locally and globally. The Android devices manufactured by different companies differ from each other in the category of hardware features and price. Hence, the users have option to choose from a wider range of Android devices according to their preferences and budget. The abundance of models will encourage users to opt for Android-powered devices in 2017.

Growing Popularity among Device Manufacturers

IOS is still a proprietary mobile operating system, whereas Android is an open source mobile operating system. Hence, major mobile device manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, Motorola and Huawei opt for Android to curtail production cost and customize the OS without any restriction. The growing popularity of Android among major mobile hardware manufactured can be determined from the dramatic sale of Android smartphones, tablets, and phablets in 2016. Certain companies like Blackberry even launched several new Android-powered smartphones instead of their flagship devices in 2016 to generate more revenue. The hardware manufacturers will boost the worldwide market share of Android in 2017 by launching new smartphones, tablets and phablets.

Decline in iPhone Sales

The popularity of a mobile operating system is directly linked to the sale/shipment of the number of devices powered by it. In 2016, Apple reported third consecutive quarterly decline in the sale of its flagship smartphone. Also, the company posted its first annual sales decline since launch of iPod in 2001. The declining iPhone sales depict the growing popularity of Android in both existing and emerging markets. Apple has to launch completely revamped iPhones and iPads in 2017 to accelerate growth, and compete with Android.

Google Services Integration

Most people use Google services like Gmail, Google Maps, Google Docs and Google Chrome on a daily basis. Hence, they opt for devices that enable them to access the Google services seamlessly. The users still have option to access the Google services on their iPhones and iPads. But the Google services are integrated deeply and seamlessly into the devices powered by Android OS. Hence, many professionals and students opt for Android devices to access a variety of Google services efficiently. The huge popularity of Google services will contribute towards keeping the worldwide market share of Android intact in the longer run.

Death of Cyanogen OS

Many market analysts predicted that only Cyanogen OS has the potential to challenge the dominance of Android. In December 2016, the team at Cyanogen Inc. announced its decision to stop all support and services to the best alternative to stock Android. However, the company has still made the source code of Cyanogen OS available to Android app developers and enterprises. The surprise death of Cyanogen OS will contribute immensely towards increasing the worldwide market share of Android in 2017.

Option to Use More Free Apps and Games

As mentioned earlier, iPhone and iPad are more expensive than many Android-powered devices. A number of studies have shown that the people using iOS-powered devices are more likely to indulge in mobile commerce and in-app purchases. Hence, the ordinary users opt for Android-powered devices to save money. Also, this category of users explores ways to access a variety of mobile apps and games without incurring additional expenses. The data posted on various websites show that Play Store contains a higher number of free apps and games than App Store. Many app makers even available a single app to Android users for free, while require iOS users to pay the price. Hence, more and more people will opt for Android-powered devices to access free apps and games in 2017.

However, no enterprise can make its mobile apps profitable simply by targeting a single platform. The statistics posted on various websites show that Apple’s App Store beats Google’s Play Store by a huge margin in the category of revenue. Hence, an enterprise has to make it app available for iOS to generate more revenue. At the same time, it also needs to make the app available for Android to accomplish higher number of downloads.
